It was fascinating to watch students' sticky notes appearing on the Padlet wall. Soon it got busy with ideas and thoughts ...
I was glad to notice the maturity on the part of my students, the maturity demonstrated by the willingness to engage in the process of reflection on the issues of identity, even if for some that wasn't something they had thought about before. I know the students come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and so Kalman's ideas often differed from their own perspective. Still, they showed respect for other ways of living and thinking and tried to find elements that appealed to them, for example appreciation for flexibility, simplicity, tolerance and self-acceptance.
A couple of students focused on the need to find enjoyment and satisfaction with the present. One student took it further by elaborating on the idea of 'Ich habe genug' - this idea of Kalman's resonates with me as it celebrates what we already have in terms of experiences and this can be enough to make us happy, rich and fulfilled. Such an approach can introduce a balance into today's lives, often obsessed with having to have more, live faster, be better. This by no means leads to stuckedness. As one student emphasised, life is a process, a trip and a journey. But maybe we could enjoy and appreciate what the life brings while we are travelling, instead of focusing only on the destination. Walking might be as satisfying as arriving home.
Let's see what this project seen as a journey brings and whether the students and myself enjoy it and find it enriching. Bon voyage!
